Description & Notes The Intrepid class represents the Federation's newest advances in technology and ship construction. Many new systems were developed for this class under the new design philosophy pervading Starfleet technicians. The Intrepid class is capable of sustained warp travel at warp 9.95 and can attain this without warp-field damage to the surrounding space. This is due to the Intrepid class' new warp systems and variable-geometry warp nacelles. These design changes to the warp systems were found almost by accident to solve the problems that the older warp systems were causing to the environment of space. The designers of this class also integrated bio-neural circuitry into its computer systems. This new advance in computer technology allows the computer systems to operate on less power and it allows operators instantaneous access to data. The Intrepid class ships are smaller; only fifteen decks, with a full crew-complement of about 150. The class leaves behind the prevailing idea held by Starfleet engineers that bigger is better. The Intrepid class ships are designed as small explorer type vessels, and they fill their role well. The disappearance of USS Voyager in April of 2371 only four months after her commissioning gave Starfleet great concern for the class design. After the discovery that the Voyager is located in the Delta Quadrant and that she has made it through numerous situations with flying colors and with the many tests and trials Starfleet has put the class through it now seems the Intrepid class has been deemed safe. Production still continues on the Intrepid line and it is planed to for several years.
